What Is The Average Potty Training Age?

When it comes to the average potty training age, most experts will tell you between 18 and 36 months of age. However, some children may fall outside of these guidelines. In the rare case, a child may be ready to train before 18 months of age. And some children may not be ready until after 36 months of age. The important thing is not to force your child before they are ready. This may push back your efforts even further. Your child may refuse any attempts to potty train for quite awhile if pushed to do so.

So how can you tell if your child is ready for the potty? First, have a casual discussion about potty training with your toddler. If they seem interested or eager, they may be ready. Another way to tell is if they can stay dry for longer than two hours, which indicates bladder control. Next, take them on a shopping excursion. Have them choose their own potty, and as a special motivator let them also choose their favorite underwear, even if they are not ready to wear them.

Next, you may want to get some assistance from your pediatrician at your child's next visit by asking for potty training tips. Pediatricians have seen it all when it comes to potty training. Also, try using a potty training DVD for both you and your child, they make them for both kids and parents. If your toddler enjoys playing with dolls, there is actually a potty training doll you can buy for them. Another strategy is to use a reward chart with stickers and prizes for sustained good potty behavior. Many of these chart templates can be found online or in potty training books.

Now that you know the average potty training age, and why it's not that big of a deal, you can consider whether your little one is old enough to start training. If you start the process and your child throws fits every time or cries, they are probably still too young. The most stress-free potty training happens when your child is ready and wants to use the potty. Once they are proficient, switch them to the underwear they chose and use training pants only at bedtime until they are able to stay dry the entire night.
