Dealing With Common Potty Training Problems

Potty training is not always an easy task. Some children may go through the process almost effortlessly, but for others there are potty training problems that are encountered. Many of these issues are quite common and there are ways to fix them. First, let's discuss the child that is adamant about not using the potty and resists your every effort to encourage them. They may even cry or throw tantrums when placed on their potty seat. And, they may not sit for more than a few seconds without wanting to get up.

This is a perfect example of a child who is not ready to potty train. Many parents think there is a magic age when their child should be trained. Pediatric guidelines state the average age is between 18 and 36 months, but your child may train earlier or later than this. For some reason, boys seem to train later than girls. So, even if your child is approaching 36 months don't panic. They will indicate their readiness which is the right time to get started. This may include asking to wear underwear, asking to use the potty or seeming eager when you discuss the subject of potty training with them.

For the child who is a bit hesitant, let them choose their own potty chair. This of course makes them more likely to use it. And, let them pick out the underwear of their choice. This is a motivation for them to keep their training pants clean by using the potty, because they know once they get the process down pat they can wear the underwear they have chosen. Girls can observe the bathroom habits of older sisters or their mother, while boys can watch older brothers or their father as a learning example.

Another one of the most common but less covered of potty training problems is holding in bowel movements. Your child may have no problem urinating in their training pants, or even the potty. But they may balk at the idea of going 'number two' in the potty. This may lead to them holding their bowels to try and prevent it. This can lead to blockages and difficult, painful bowel movements. For the more severe cases, doctors sometimes prescribe safe laxatives or enemas to force bowel movements. Regardless of the issues you are experiencing while potty training your little one, take heart in the knowledge that eventually, your child will be fully potty trained.
